e.e.’s work does sound a bit like schizophrenic word salad speech.

According to this book, e.e. was swimming in the Emerson, Thoreau, and Whitman deep end of the pool. When describing the human condition, to him “Alive” was to live in heightened emotional intensity, while being “Dead” was equivalent to merely existing–not really living. He used verbs to describe being alive, and nouns with being dead.
